Tilak Museum
Tilak Museum can be called the chief attraction in the famous Kesari Wada which is also called the Gaikwad Wada. The museum always attracts the tourists, students and researchers and unveils the legendary career of the Father of Indian Unrest Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Certainly Tilak Museum can be listed among the most important museums in the city of Pune.
As you enter, you can see Tilak’s Genealogical Table and Horoscope tracing back to his relatives and black and white photograph of Gorewada, in Chikhli village of Ratnagiri where he was born. Then you can see Tilak’s writings, his Sanskrit poems, along with the copy of his famous book Gita Rahasya along with his certificates, rare photographs of Fergusson College, New English School and Deccan College. The photograph of Tilak’s funarel is saddening but also beautiful in its own way, as Tilak looks like a yogi. Along with these are various oil paintings of Tilak and various greats like Swami Vivekanand and also Gandhi with Tilak.
The replica of Tilak’s study room made by artist Suhas Buhalkar is enlivening. One actually gets a feel that the departed soul is sitting there working on an editorial for his newspaper Kesari. The study room also consists of his bed, table, chortles, nutcracker, wall clock, etc. Also the replica of Mandalay jail, where Tilak was imprisoned, has Tilak engrossed in writing Gita Rahasya in light of a burning lamp. Everything about the Museum is worth seeing and has been wonderfully preserved and recreated.
For everyone wishing to know about the great leader or about India’s history during the British era the place is a must visit.
